Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about courses, tutors and our Edinburgh studio

What is Submarine?

Submarine is an independent art and design school based in central Edinburgh. We run creative courses, workshops and events for both children and adults, covering everything from drawing and painting to digital arts, design, animation and crafts.

What age groups do you teach?

We teach both children and adults. Our tutors design sessions to suit different age groups and abilities, so whether you're booking a class for a child or joining as an adult beginner, there's a course suited to you.

Do I need any previous art experience to join a course?

No. Our tutors aim to provide fun, creative opportunities to everyone regardless of experience or ability, in a relaxed and safe environment at our Edinburgh studio.

Are your tutors checked to work with children?

Yes. All tutors are PVG checked, and a qualified first aider is always on site during lessons.

Where is Submarine located?

Our studio is at 36 Henderson Row, in Edinburgh's New Town, close to Stockbridge and Canonmills. We're easy to reach by bus and it's about a 15 minute walk from Waverley Station.

What facilities does the studio have?

Studio 1 is our main art class and workshop space, with easels, drawing boards and animation stations, and it converts into a 36-seat screening and events venue. The Engine Room is our digital arts and meeting room, with a 12-seat table, a smart screen, iPads and a creative reference library. We also have a kitchen area, outdoor seating, an A3 printer and two toilets, one with disabled access.

Can I hire a room for a private event or meeting?

Yes, the Engine Room is available for bookings such as meetings or small events. Get in touch with us for more information and availability.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes, our gift cards are redeemable across all courses, so they make a flexible present for anyone wanting to try a class at Submarine.

How do I become a tutor at Submarine?
