Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about courses, tutors and our Edinburgh studio
Who can do art classes and other creative sessions at Submarine?
Submarine is for everyone - from children aged 7-12, to teenagers aged 13-17 and grown-ups of all ages and from all walks of life. Whether you are a parent of a child looking for after school or weekend art clubs or an experienced illustrator looking to practice your craft in good company, Submarine is for you.
What opportunities for creativity do you offer at Submarine Art & Design School?
Our timetable offers 7-10 weekly sessions per block of general art clubs and specialist classes. You can see the timetable here. We also offer holiday art clubs for children and teenagers aged 7-15, as well as creative company offsites for businesses and other professional groups. Contact us at studio@submarineart.co.uk with any questions.
What are the main specialist classes at Submarine?
Our specialist tutors deliver:
- Drawing and Painting: Core skills in colour, line and composition.
- Animation: Bringing drawings to life frame by frame.
- Illustration and Digital Art: Character design and worldbuilding on tablets and paper.
- Comics: Storytelling through hand drawn panels, characters and scripts.
- Sewing: Hand and machine stitching to make wearable, usable things.
What expectations do you have around students' ability?
We're beginner friendly but can build on existing skills. Some make really fast progress and are producing work well beyond their years, and others can take their time. Our tutors are well versed in creating the right environment for each individual.
What should students bring with them in terms of materials and refreshments?
No materials are required and we'll supply iPads where appropriate. If students already use Procreate and would like to bring their own iPads along, that's fine. Students are welcome to bring snacks and a drink and we have water and cups!
How would you describe the 'vibe' of the sessions - are they quiet and serious, loud and fun or somewhere in between?
Learning through play - sessions often have a fun, laid back approach while learning genuine skills and building connection with other students. Younger age groups are often a bit louder but we do our best to manage noise levels. Older groups are encouraged to socialise at the student's pace. Please do let us know in advance if your child or teen has any specific learning or social needs.
Who teaches art, design and other creative endeavours at Submarine?
Our Programme Manager and Lead Tutor is Sorin, our brilliant intermedia artist who's been teaching at Submarine for years. Our amazing tutors are typically experienced, working artists and teachers who teach part-time. Often graduates of art schools such as Edinburgh College of Art, they bring a fresh perspective and real insight to our students, along with years of artistic experience. All are PVG checked. (PVG is the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme managed by Disclosure Scotland. This is a criminal record check and continuous monitoring system required by law for those who work with children or protected adults in Scotland.)
Where in Edinburgh do Submarine sessions take place?
Our three art studios are located at 36 Henderson Row, right between Stockbridge and Canonmills in Edinburgh's New Town. We deliver our programme here. It's a special, calm space that fosters creativity and we do our best to maintain the atmosphere. If you would like us to bring some of the Submarine vibe to your workplace or another space, do let us know - we're open to building new opportunities for creativity anywhere!
