Tom Ellis is a graphic artist, designer and animator, and co-founder of Submarine.
Tom graduated from Central Saint Martins in London in 2003 after completing a foundation course and a BA Hons degree in Product Design. After gaining valuable experience working at The Conran Shop, D&AD and also studying animation at London School of Printing he co-founded the visualising company Treehouse 24 Ltd in 2005 with Lucy Scott. For the past 18 years Tom worked as artist, animator and project manager on hundreds of commercial projects producing storyboards, animatics and concept visuals for some of the largest global brands and working with many of the UK's leading advertising and design agencies. Clients include BBC, Stella Artois, Kinder, British Airways, Budweiser, Amazon, Bacardi, BT, Virgin Media and many many more.
In 2024 Tom and Lucy launched Submarine, an independent, modern art and design school, located in the centre of Edinburgh, focusing on providing opportunities for people of all ages to experience a full programme of fun and inventive creative classes, workshops and events and hopefully provide an introduction to more of the creative industries that exist in the world we live in today.
Creativity in general is something that can enrich peoples lives, build confidence and develop skills that can be hugely valuable in all walks of life, both socially and professionally. No matter what level of ability or experience you have Submarine’s aim is to spark inspiration and help people discover and develop their creativity and gain a positive experience.
Tom is particularly passionate about bringing opportunities to young people in the community through teaching and sharing his professional skills and experience.
He has also volunteered as a football coach for many years at Stockbridge Primary School and has gained coaching certificates through the Scottish FA.
Tom has designed the Submarine interior space, brand identity, posters, flyers and website.
As well as working on his classes and workshops Tom continues to produce his own independent graphic art and design work.
He is first aid trained, holds a PVG both for work at Submarine and at Stockbridge Primary School and completed courses in childrens safety and mental health.
Submarine also offer their design services to help promote local schools, charities and events including the Autumn Magic Carpet Concert at Stockbridge Church, which they worked with their students to create the poster and programme artwork.
Tom lives in Edinburgh with his family, two dogs (Ruby and Charra) and a cat (Jerry).
