The human face is where anatomy meets identity, presenting a unique challenge to the artist. This course covers a variety of approaches and techniques to help you rise to that challenge.

On this course we’ll be experimenting with colour, composition, and light. Working with various wet and dry materials, we will examine what it takes to capture the likeness of the subject and communicate something of their essence.

We’ll work from reference photos and projected images, explore self portraiture, and have the chance to work from a live model. We’ll also be learning about the anatomy of the head and shoulders, to help us make sense of what we’re looking at.

We’ll start each class by taking a look at a series of inspiring works, before we get started on our own projects.

This class is suitable for beginners and everybody with an interest in broadening their knowledge of portraiture. All materials will be provided, giving you an opportunity to explore a variety of different mediums including pencil, charcoal, watercolour, acrylics, and oil paint.

During this course we will learn :

  • About the anatomy of the head and shoulders.

  • What makes a good reference photo.

  • Interesting ways to light a live model.

  • Techniques and tips for using pencil and charcoal.

  • How to prepare the painting’s surface.

  • Colour and value mixing techniques.

  • Understanding and recreating skin tones.

  • How to organise your palette.

  • Where to begin, and when to stop!
