Learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting while you build your confidence on this fun and varied course.

During this fast-paced course you will experiment with a wide range of wet and dry mediums. Often the edges between the various disciplines will blur – you might try drawing with paint, or painting with dry mediums.

We’ll be covering themes including portraiture, landscapes, still life, and abstract art, as we explore the secrets of capturing three dimensions on paper to really bring our images to life. Understanding anatomy is crucial to drawing people, so we will also learn a little about what’s happening under our skin.

Each class starts with a quick trip into art history as we explore inspiring relevant artworks with our projector, before getting to work on our own projects.

Some of the things we'll be covering include:

• The importance of keeping a sketchbook.

• How to use light & shadow to give our pictures depth.

• Tips to translate what we see in front of us onto the paper.

• How to draw the edges of things – sharp or soft, there or not there!

• What is a ‘nice’ line?

• What makes a good composition?

• How to mix colours.

• How to stay calm when drawing/painting gets stressful!

• How to cope with and embrace mistakes.

• Whilst observational drawing plays a vital role, students will be encouraged to work with intuition and self expression.
